Dead Space
It's a shame, but I feel like Dead Space didn't get quite the recognition it deserved. People saw a new horror IP from EA and didn't give it a second look, but this game is the beginning of a great series.
While gamers didn't make much of a fuss over Dead Space, critics loved it, and for good reason. The audiovisual aspect of this game is quite amazing. Great textures and surreal lighting flow with the great sound design and serve to immerse you fully as you stalk the tight corridors of the USG Ishimura. The combat is visceral and unique and the game is paced perfectly. You'll be on your toes through this one for sure. |

The main character, Isaac, is armed to the teeth with unique ore mining weapons that are a breath of fresh air in gaming. The combat makes great use of these weapons with the focus being on dismembering your enemies to slow them down and conserve precious ammunition. Cutting an enemy limb from limb, trying to immobilize it before turning to address the screech you just heard from the opposite end of the room is exhilarating.
Throughout the game, Isaac is searching for his girlfriend, Nicole. He’s haunted by his memories of her, and they manifest in the world around him as hallucinations and intense fear. He will stop at nothing to reclaim his lost love and his enemies, the necromorphs, are ready to put his will to the test. The realistic gore and deformed creatures that populate the Ishimura make you walk through the ship’s dimly-lit halls with extreme caution.
It’s hard to remember a game that drew me in like Dead Space. While the game isn't shockingly scary, it has a unique tension throughout that keeps you on edge. I felt truly isolated aboard the planet-cracker, and I was personally invested in Isaac’s mission. This game is recommended for just about anyone - it's an experience every gamer should have. Visceral Studios is on to something here...
