Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts is an RPG born from the collective efforts of Square Enix and Disney. The cartoony visuals look kiddy, the main character sounds young, heck even the name sounds childish. Rest assured though, this is an epic adventure that an adult can enjoy too.
You are Sora, a young boy who lives on an island with his friends Riku and Kairi. The first few hours of the game have you running and jumping around the island doing little tasks to familiarize you with the way your character moves. Once you have had sufficient practice the story begins build, slowly at first with simple conversations of leaving the island between the trio of friends. Eventually, when you decide to build a raft, something strange happens. An unknown visitor graces the island and it turns out that you may get your wish of seeing other worlds, just not in the manner you and your friends had planned. The story in Kingdom hearts is top notch. It’s got that solid Disney flair and enough complications and details to keep you engaged. Throughout your journey, you’ll encounter a plethora of Disney and Square characters, all shoehorned into the story in one way or another. Toward the end of the first game (and throughout the excellent sequel) the emotions run high with friendships, lives, and whole worlds threatened by darkness.
The game sports some wonderfully designed areas and beautiful music. Every piece of music in Kingdom Hearts is amazing, right down to the title screen music. A subtle theme ties all the dramatic music together and lends a huge amount of emotion to the cut scenes. This game is a thrill to hear and with its solid art, not too bad on the eyes either.
Kingdom Hearts sports a real-time combat system with a ton of freedom. You’ll be jumping, rolling, climbing up enemies, pulling off airborne combos, using devastating magic and even flying, all while bashing skulls with your weapon of choice- the key blade. As you gain experience, you level up, and with each new level comes increased HP, MP, and abilities. The combat is satisfying and by the end of the game, you’ll be pulling off some pretty over-the-top moves with ease.
The game can be beaten in 20-30 hours if you rush, but if you take the time to find new items, synthesize weapons and fight in the coliseum, you could easily lose 10s of hours more. Kingdom hearts is truly a must-play for any PS2 owner or anyone who is a fan of RPGs.
If you haven’t played this game, you owe it to yourself to see its unique style of storytelling that is truly a cut above. It doesn’t hurt that the wonderful story is wrapped in an incredible gameplay experience either.
