PixelJunk Eden
PixelJunk Eden is a unique game to say the least. You play as a small, insect-like character, traipsing around the environment and collecting pollen. You have a line of silk that you use to anchor you to a surface as you swing to build momentum for a jump. As you traverse the “gardens” of the game, the pollen you find fills seeds that grow into plants for you to jump on. You build higher and higher and collect more and more pollen in hopes of finding a spectra. The spectra is your goal in every garden. There are five in each, and you’ll know their relative whereabouts based on a pulsing light emanating from their direction. Every time you collect a spectra, you’re kicked back to the title screen where you play as your character to jump into the levels. New plants, spawned by the collection of spectra in the levels, allow you to reach more levels.
As simple as it is, PixelJunk Eden is an engrossing and artistic experience. The unique colors and sounds in the game give it a very distinct and somewhat soothing feel. As you progress, you’ll run into different surfaces with unique properties such as the rock which you don’t stick to like you do to the plants. You’ll also find a few enemies to be outsmarted and even environmental factors like wind, which add a whole new element to your plant-jumping.
The option to play with a friend is welcomed and adds a new layer of fun to the game. You’ll swing around, collecting pollen together and, most likely, laughing as your partner falls all the way to the bottom of the level and dies, crying for your help as they fall. You’ll also find enjoyment in watching your partner jump for an out-of-the-way spectra and miss as you swoop in elegantly to collect it.
Eden impresses with its distinct style and soothing gameplay. It’s a very addictive game and excellent for any type of gamer.
